Term 2 MIT-22 Hui at KPMG Viaduct
What’s on top?
Today is the third time our group has met but the first time all of us have been face-to-face. Nick was missing from our last one; Anousha and I from the first meet in Coromandel. In a recent Staff Only Day at school, I was reminded of the value being connected with the people I work alongside. The relevance in being part of the MIT-22 group this year seeing the genuine level of care and perseverance each of us wants for our kura to become better places of learning.
The office building at KPMG Viaduct is an awesome place to be. In a world very different to our school and classroom settings, it is always an eye-opening experience when you see the spaces other professionals work in. Nice view of the water, yachts and a beautiful sunny day. Lunch and coffee was a bonus - many thanks for hosting us, KPMG!
1) What has emerged to add clarity and confirmation to my prototype design?
The last online presentation helped me to fine tune the direction of my HMW statement and the timeline I have to work with to complete my project.
A Google Site is still to be my best platform to present my project. It has to be user-friendly for at least Year 7&8, with the intention that it will also be accessible by parents and teachers.
Video tutorials lead by my students will be a key feature of the site.
I need to use an existing learning progression framework for maths, specifically algebra, to inform users what level of algebra they are working at.
2) What has challenged or confronted my prototype design?
- I need to teach algebra with a lead group of students, whom I have already identified through a Level 2 algebra e-asTTLE test. I will work in others as the group and I gain confidence in what we’re doing.
- I must accept that recording video tutorials needs to be a key feature of my project, THEN I need to consider how do I make my project tool available across our cluster? For example, providing a script, or basic framework, which can be modified by individual teachers/schools.
- I know video tutorials have been done before by other kaiako, which left me second-guessing myself and if this would be worthwhile. After sharing this with the group, they backed me and my secondary thought: We learn better from those around us - our friends, peers, mates, own models. So, I will persevere with the video tutorials!
3) What do I need help with?
Need to create my timeline towards completion and success. This term we are prototyping and in Term 3 it’s a rollout of the project with the tweaking and fine-tuning only required.
The site is started but needs a lot of work. I’m trying to prioritise the steps needed, so does that mean setting up the vocabulary page, so students can implement what they’re learning, or do I get straight into recording tutorials?
What feedback did I get?
I was really happy with the feedback received from the group. They are all supportive of what I want to do and seemed happy with the intended direction. I especially liked comments along the lines that “students learn better from their peers”. There is an essence of relatability when you see those you are familiar with leading something new. I think that’s like anything we do when it’s new - if someone I know and trust can do it, then so can I!
KPMG is a great space and they are a part of the the "Big 4" in the business industry. Glad you had a great atmosphere to get your work done. I am looking forward to see how this work in for 2023 for the Year 7s and 8s next year. Everything sounds like it is working well.
