Session 5 DFI Reflection and Learning
Sandpit Learning
2021 Jono's DFI Learning Log: Session 5
Multimodal Learning in Reading: I learned a lot from today's session which I can see being immediately available to use in class. I'd heard of T-shaped literacy earlier this year but it was good to get an understanding of the purpose for different texts you use in multimodal learning. Multimodal means different methods of communication, so when combined with 'learning' we are creating new knowledge experiences and development through reading, viewing and listening. There was a video shown today which compares multimodal learning to the window dressing in a shop. I like the analogy to education because it acknowledges what we as educators are capable of when combining basic 'web design' concepts with our reading programmes.

Planning beforehand is essential because it allows you to focus on the end goal. It becomes very easy to lose focus if you start thinking with the aesthetic value of a multimodal sites, so it's important to do the groundwork and really consider what is your theme and the texts your students will be able to read.

The conflict or challenge I still perceive in using this new tool is "where is the student's accountability for learning when using multimodal learning?". It's great to get student's upskilling through a range of texts on a shared theme. Some thought as the teacher still needs to be given as to what student's do with their new information. Learning responses such as graphic organisers, comprehension, and even specific reading skills could be used for practise. I can say I've got a lot of experience leading effective reading programmes, so it's a good challenge for me to 'upskill' and use multimodal learning as a new tool with my class.

Muti-text Database: This database was created for any educator across the Manaiakalani cluster to add their own texts for a range of themes and topics, across Year 0-13. I am a little concerned that someone could do a Thanos and delete something but I'm sure there are safeguards against this.

Kia ora Jono, thanks for taking the time to put this reflection together. Great that you were able to take so much away from last week's session. That multi-text database is an incredible resource - and yes, there are people who keep an eye on the Sheet to make sure that it is looked after. Looking forward to Week 6's refelection! Ngā mihi
